Both ASD and ADHD are reported to have had substantial increases in prevalence within the past 10 years. In earlier versions of the DSM, this was not acceptable. With the DSM-5, clinicians are permitted to make an ASD diagnosis in the context of ADHD. The overlap between ADHD and Autism is poorly understood, partly because until the DSM-5 was released in 2013, a clinician couldn’t diagnose both ADHD and autism (Taurines et al., 2012).
